Help for Couples & Families
If you've found yourself looking at this page, you are probably wondering if therapy can really help. The answer to that question is yes, therapy really can help. But when it comes to couples therapy or family therapy, not all therapists are created equal. For therapists to provide effective treatment to couples and families, they must have received the appropriate education, training and supervised professional experience. Therapists who have not been trained to provide these interventions may see their role as nothing more than a mediator or a referee of family disputes. But these types of therapists are not providing true help. In fact, there are some situations in which an untrained therapist may be making things worse! An untrained therapist may think that it is their role to decide who is right and wrong when faced with a couples' dispute. But in truth, this sort of an intervention provides only a superficial solution. Not only is it unlikely to provide the couple with any lasting relief, it may create resentment in the individual who is on the "losing" end of the argument (as well as creating resentment towards the therapist!).
The therapists at Belmont Psych primarily use Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT). While many may have heard that CBT is an effective intervention for individuals, most people don't realize that CBT can be an extremely effective intervention for the problems facing couples and families.

Therapy Is More Than A Conversation
Some critics of psychotherapy have likened the role of the therapist to a friend who is paid to sit and chit chat with clients about their lives or just listen while people complain. And while some therapists do perhaps provide little more than emotional support, the role of the Cognitive Behavior Therapist is different. CBT involves providing a great deal of education, helping clients to remember and use that education, teaching concrete skills, and tracking progress to confirm that patients are benefitting. It is our hope that by reviewing the information provided on this website, that anyone who is interested in our services, or in any therapist's services for that matter, is able to appreciate the difference it makes to work with well-trained Cognitive Behavior Therapists.
