Anxiety and Phobias
The clinicians who practice at Belmont Psych are well-known for their expertise in the treatment of anxiety in adults, children and adolescents. This makes our practice a frequent choice for referral from local physicians. Our therapists are some of the most skilled and experienced clinicians in the region at providing Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) treatment, which is the treatment of choice for many anxiety disorders and phobias. Improper treatment for Anxiety disorders can result in a worsening of symptoms, and as such, it is essential that this be treated by a skilled professional. The clinicians at Belmont Psych have a particular specialization in the treatment of Anxiety disorders for individuals of all ages. The anxiety disorders treated regularly at our practice include Panic Disorder, Agoraphobia, Social Anxiety Disorder (Social Phobia), Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, Generalized Anxiety and any and all specific phobias including fear of driving, fear of heights, fear of spiders, and fear of flying.
Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), a problem that is closely related to the Anxiety Disorders and is often confused for one, is also regularly treated at our practice. Please see the page entitled "Obsessive Compulsive Disorder" for more information about OCD. Anxiety and OCD are the most common problems we treat at our practice, reflecting the symptoms of roughly 60% of the clients referred to us at any given time.
Therapy Is More Than A Conversation
Some critics of psychotherapy have likened the role of the therapist to a friend who is paid to sit and chit chat with clients about their lives or just listen while people complain. And while some therapists do perhaps provide little more than emotional support, the role of the Cognitive Behavior Therapist is different. CBT involves providing a great deal of education, helping clients to remember and use that education, teaching concrete skills, and tracking progress to confirm that patients are benefitting. It is our hope that by reviewing the information provided on this website, that anyone who is interested in our services, or in any therapist's services for that matter, is able to appreciate the difference it makes to work with well-trained Cognitive Behavior Therapists.
