Information for Referring Providers
Belmont Psychological Services is a group of psychotherapists who specialize in the provision of Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT). CBT is a structured and focused style of therapy that provides people with the concrete tools that they need to get better quickly. It is by far the most researched of all the clinical orientations and has been proven to be helpful for a wide variety of mental health problems. While many therapists claim to be proficient in the use of CBT, it is important for referring providers to note that there are actually very few therapists in the area who are truly utilizing the model. This is for a variety of reasons, but often occurs because the therapist doesn't understand CBT well enough to realize that the techniques they are using are not really CBT!
CBT distinguishes itself from other clinical orientations in several ways:
The clinicians at Belmont Psych include both Doctoral and Master's level clinicians. All of our therapists remain active in their training to ensure that patients get the best help available. We participate regularly in case consultation, educational conferences and in-service workshops. Our therapists have different specialties and treat a wide variety of populations and disorders.
Belmont Psych treats a considerable number of patients who are suffering from Anxiety-related disorders, including Panic Disorder, Agoraphobia, PTSD, Social Phobia and Simple Phobias. Different therapists specialize in different age groups --from infancy through old age--but all of the clinicians on our team are particularly specialized in the treatment of anxiety. And in fact, Anxiety Disorders and OCD reflect the diagnoses of roughly 60% of the patients who are being treated in our practice at any given time. The other types of problems treated most frequently at our practice include depression, ADHD, PTSD, Autism Spectrum disorders, Selective Mutism, difficulty with adjusting to stressful life circumstances, and couples and family conflict.
Our clinicians are unique in that we are some of the few providers in the area who use evidence-based interventions, including CBT, with children of all ages. Children can be wonderful participants in CBT and it is not uncommon for their symptoms to be resolved within just a few sessions. Problems such as school refusal, separation anxiety, and/or phobias are often corrected quickly and easily. Proper diagnosis is absolutely essential to treatment planning, and improper diagnosis can lead to unnecessary and/or prolonged treatment.
Our therapists are known in the community for helping patients with complex problems who have failed to make progress in past treatment. We work closely with our referring providers to ensure that the patient receives a smooth and coordinated service. All of us at Belmont Psych maintain strict adherence to legal and ethical guidelines and demonstrate the highest level of professionalism.
Referring providers who have questions about the specialties of our clinicians are encouraged to call the clinical director, Dr. Katy Manetta directly at 562-799-6700. If you are a referring provider who would like to schedule a visit to tour our offices and meet our clinical staff, please feel free to contact us and we will be happy to accommodate you.

CBT distinguishes itself from other clinical orientations in several ways:
- CBT therapists are active participants in therapy. Far from the stereotypical image that people have of the therapist who sits silently and nods while the client engages in an endless stream of consciousness, CBT therapists are active, directive and structured.
- CBT treatment involves homework. Whether it is an action plan to try out new behaviors, an assignment to complete thought records, or facing fears in an Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) plan, CBT almost always includes some element of practice between sessions.
- CBT treatment for a number of mental health disorders is protocol-driven and may utilize a workbook which structures the treatment so as to provide the optimal results that are demonstrated by the research.
